3 things to do in Manchester this weekend (21 – 23 March, 2014)

central Library

Here’s our guide to the best of what’s on in and around Manchester this weekend, plus some bonus suggestions from our social media friends.

  • The much-awaited reopening of Manchester’s Central Library takes place on Saturday following a four-year £50 million refurbishment, bringing this iconic Grade II-listed building bang up to date whilst restoring the intricate 1930s architecture. Key features to look out for include the Henry Watson Music Library, the BFI Mediatheque and those looking to trace their family roots back to Manchester should visit Archives+.
  • Salford Quays will be illuminated this weekend as Future City kicks off a month of contemporary art activity at the waterside location. Thank You by Craig Morrison is the first of five installations, which sees two of the world’s most powerful display lasers beaming Thank You in Morse Code across the night sky in memory of the service men and women from the WWI and WWII, and to thank eminent Manchester scientist Alan Turing for the many lives he helped save.
  • Manchester Histories Festival starts its 10-day celebration of Greater Manchester’s unique histories and heritage today with a packed programme suitable for all ages. A must for visitors is the hop-on free heritage bus, where you can spend the day exploring the hidden gems of Manchester and Salford’s small heritage venues including Victoria Baths, Manchester Jewish Museum and Chetham’s Library.
