Planning a weekend visit to our lovely region? Here’s our top 3 ideas for what to get up to, plus some bonus suggestions from our social media followers.

  • The BMX Supercross World Cup kicks off today at Manchester’s National Cycling Centre with the Elite Men and Women’s Time Trials Superfinal tonight. Olympians Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips will both be in action on the indoor BMX track, along with all of British Cycling’s BMX Academy riders.
  • Tomorrow Whitworth Art Gallery unveils a new exhibition called Land Art from conceptual and public art pioneer Nancy Holt. Although most well-known for her large-scale sculptural work, this exhibition focuses on Holt’s photography and film, highlighting her interest in memory, perception, time and space.
  • This weekend is your last chance to watch The Lion King at the Palace Theatre before Simba and pals take their final bow following a extended stint in the city. The show is a must-see spectacle, suitable for adults and children alike, with enchanting costumes, sets, music and storytelling.
