The ‘What’s on in Manchester’ blog will give you a heads up for selected highlights of where to be and what to see in Manchester for the coming month – published every month on behalf of Visit Manchester.


The Cake and Bake Show // 5 – 7 April 2013 @ Manchester Central, thecakeandbakeshow.co.uk

“The only live experiential event dedicated to the world of cakes, breads and the art of baking” comes to Manchester this April, with star speakers including Mary Berry, Tom Herbert and Eric Lanlard. This is a great event for all baking enthusiasts and also those keen to learn the craft of cookery!

Queer Contact: Tranchester // Present until 20 April 2013 @ Contact Theatre, contactmcr.com

A new exhibition entitled Transchester is going to be on at Contact Theatre from 4 February – 20 April 2013. It is a part of Queer Contact 2013. The exhibition features portraits of Manchester’s unconventional club kids featuring Zsa Zsa Noir, Dave Tester, Israel Delgado and more, from Homoelectric photographer Malc Stone.

Beryl Korot: Text and Commentary // Present until 16 June 2013 @ Whitworth Art Gallery, whitworth.manchester.ac.uk

Text and Commentary (1976-7) was inspired by the punch card system of the Jacquard loom and its impact on Charles Babbage, a mathematician who originated the idea of a programmable computer in the 19th century. It is a groundbreaking work comprised of weavings, videos and paperbased scores that, when first shown in 1977, moved the video medium beyond the television’s frame and into art installation.

Art from Nature – Paintings from Mark Lightowler // 27 April – 27 July 2013 @ Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive, boltonmuseums.org.uk

Mark Lightowler is a well know local artist and butterfly expert, who works at Animal World, Moss Bank Park in Bolton. Over the years, he has produced many works of art based on specimens from Bolton Museum’s collection. This exhibition shows a selection of his work and the techniques he uses.

Manchester’s soulful chanteuse, Josephine, has created a self-reflective debut album which illustrates the many different sides of a fascinating character. Vocally, her prowess recalls ‘the Queen of gospel’, Mahalia Jackson’s distinctive contralto, yet behind the powerful delivery is a husky undercurrent making every replaying seem like a personal performance.

Female songstress Kate Nash will be performing at Manchester’s Gorilla Bar on 20 April 2013. The performance will start at 19:00. Kate will perform tracks from her forthcoming album ‘Girl Talk’, out on March 4th 2013, including brand new single ‘3 AM’. Kate’s third album showcases a new trademark sound created from working in LA and writing with the bass guitar for the first time.

OneRepublic took the world by storm in 2007 with their debut release ‘Dreaming Out Loud’. The album included the smash single “Apologize,” which shattered digital sales and airplay records worldwide and, along with second single ‘Stop And Stare’, propelled the album to platinum-plus sales and a GRAMMY® nomination.

James and Echo and the Bunnymen // 26 April 2013 @ Manchester Arena, men-arena.com

James return to the Manchester venue for the first time since 2010’s The Night Before tour to perform tracks from their first-ever boxed set The Gathering Sound. With a career that includes 12 studio albums and 20 UK Top 40 singles – including Sit Down, She’s A Star, Laid and Come Home – The Gathering Sound is the first release from James in over two years. The band have also confirmed that Echo and the Bunnymen will be appearing as their very special guests in Manchester.


Walking With Dinosaurs // 4 – 7 April @ Manchester Arena, men-arena.com

The worldwide tour roars its way into Manchester as dinosaurs take over Manchester Arena. Over £10,000,000 worth of spectacle brings the twenty mechanical creatures come to life as their 200 million year story of world domination is told. This is a great event for children and their families – and particularly those interested in dinosaurs.

Manchester Fashion Week // 22 – 26 April 2013 @ National Football Museum, mcrfashionweek.com

Manchester Fashion Week (MCRFW) will this year take place at The National Football Museum. Set in the heart of Manchester City Centre the iconic Urbis building will be turned into a chic hub that will host 30 fashion shows and 15A new exhibition entitled exhibition spaces throughout the 5-day event.

Following on from their hugely successful 2012 tour, the girls return in 2013 with hilarious all-new sketches, as well as all the very best bits from last time round. Looking at everything that makes today’s woman tick from the joys of teenagers, to the hell of IKEA, the madness of holiday reps and the insanity of DIY.

A dazzling new production, set in Seville, and reflecting a Goya painting, with fountains, flowers and orange trees, guarantees an evening of passion and romance with unforgettable melodies and perhaps the best known baritone aria of all, The Toreador’s Song. (Sung in French.)

Dave’s critically acclaimed show examines many of life’s situations where words really don’t come easy. These include tongue-tied parents explaining the facts of life, ridiculous newspaper stories, poems, adolescent chat-up lines, police speak, pretentious menus and an extended selection of song lyrics that range from the lazy through the surreal to the ridiculous.

Looking at Landscape: Pastoral to Present // Present until 28 April 2013 @ Gallery Oldham, galleryoldham.co.uk

This exhibition showcases paintings from Oldham’s extensive and impressive art collection. These range from popular favourites to works that have not been displayed for a number of years. Recent acquisitions are displayed alongside paintings that were acquired by the Gallery in the nineteenth century.

Redesigning Fashion – How to Change the World in Style // Until 7 July 2013 @ Hat Works Museum, Stockport, stockport.gov.uk

This wonderful new exhibition explores fashion from the ‘make do and mend’ era of the 1940’s, when being creative with very few materials was both stylish and necessary. It compares and contrasts the results with today’s sustainable fashion scene, which combines ecological and ethical principles with new concepts, innovation and aesthetics, showing how to transform fashion without compromising on style.
